How Movement Builds Pain Resilience

When I strain a muscle–as I did last December–I’m miserable. But here’s what I know: research says the more consistently I move, the less those everyday aches and twinges should knock me down.

Could it be that I’d feel even more pain if I weren’t exercising regularly?

Turns out, yes.

A study of over 10,000 adults found that people who exercised more frequently were better at tolerating pain. (We're talking hand-in-freezing-water kind of pain.) And it wasn’t just the fittest folks—those who increased their activity levels over time also built greater resilience.

In other words: pain tolerance isn’t just something you’re born with. It’s something you can train.

Pain tolerance isn’t fixed—it’s forged through movement.
