What Hot Tubs Do for Your Body (That Saunas Might Not)

I love a good soak. There’s something about slipping into hot water that feels indulgent, primal, and just a little bit magical. But what if it’s more than a mood boost? What if it’s actually good for your health?

Turns out that at least an extreme form might be.

Hot water isn’t just soothing—it’s physiologically smart

A new study compared three kinds of passive heat therapy: hot tubs, traditional dry saunas, and far-infrared saunas (unfortunately they didn’t test hot baths).

All three warmed the body—but only hot water immersion significantly raised core body temperature and triggered notable changes in circulation, immune response, and inflammation.

In short? Hot tubs did more than make participants feel cozy. They stimulated the cardiovascular and immune systems in measurable ways—and those effects lasted even after the soak ended.

Why? When you’re submerged in water, your body can’t cool itself efficiently (sweating doesn’t help in water). So your internal temperature rises faster—and that thermal stress triggers beneficial adaptations.

This kind of heat exposure has been linked to:

  • 🌡️ Improved vascular health
  • 💗 Lower blood pressure
  • 🛡️ A more responsive immune system
  • 🧘‍♀️ Stress relief (and not just the spa kind)

One note: this study focused on healthy, active adults in their 20s. But the implications for anyone seeking non-exercise ways to support their health are exciting.

💡TRY THIS

Start with 10–20 minutes in a hot tub.

Stay hydrated and listen to your body.

Skip it if you have uncontrolled blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, or heat intolerance—talk to your doctor first.

Bonus: Make it a ritual. Breathe deep. Restoration is productive, too.
