Stretch More? Stretch Less? Is It Even Important? No Wonder We’re Confused

Last winter, while I was out walking—fast—I almost fell.

I didn’t hit the ground, but jamming my leg down hard left me with pulled hamstrings that screamed into my hip. Within days my piriformis rebelled, and suddenly I was moving like a rusty hinge.

That’s when I realized that flexibility isn’t just about touching your toes. Flexibility is about resilience—the ability to bend without breaking.

But the science on flexibility is an infuriating mess. One study says stretching is useless. Another says we’re doing too much. A third claims flexibility could predict how long you live. No wonder everyone’s confused.

Confused about stretching? You should be. The science is messy—but the takeaway is simple: resilience comes from flexibility and strength.

Here’s where the research actually agrees: flexibility matters—but only when it’s paired with strength and practiced wisely. That’s what protects your joints, keeps tissues springy, and, according to a 28-year study of 3,000 adults, may even extend your life. In fact, men with poor flexibility were nearly twice as likely to die early compared to their limber peers. Women fared better—but those with low flexibility still carried greater risk.

So no, stretching isn’t about toe-touch bragging rights. It’s about age-proofing your future.

Try This

Instead of forcing your body into a deeper hold, try this three-step reset:

💛 Warm up dynamically: leg swings, hip circles, arm sweeps. (We do our own version in Wonderfulness Workouts.)
💛 Stretch actively: contract the muscle while lengthening it—like a cat yawning into a stretch. (Many of our Workout exercises fit this concept.)
💛 Keep it brief but regular: 5–10 minutes most days improves mobility, protects joints, and supports longevity. (That’s how long we stretch at the end of Wonderfulness Workouts.)

Consistency—not contortion—is what pays dividends in your “age-proofing account.”
